The Balance Arts Center is pleased to offer a variety of movement classes created specifically for seniors.
Balance Arts Center faculty members teach courses using the principles of the Alexander Technique, and tailor the information to the needs of specific populations. The courses have been specially designed for seniors, taking into account their desires for balance, strength, ease of movement, and better breathing, as well as their fear of falling. Each can be offered as a one-time workshop, a workshop series, or as a one-hour ongoing class.
We recognize that many seniors are fully active and functioning, while others have limitations with thinking and moving. Our faculty is very skilled in adapting these courses to all abilities and levels of functioning. Because we work from core movement fundamentals, we are able to effectively teach multiple levels in one classroom.
All of the Balance Arts Center faculty are either certified teachers of the Alexander Technique or are currently enrolled in a training program to become certified teachers. All have experience working with senior populations.
To make these classes available to your residents, we are able to offer the classes at your location.

THE BALANCE ARTS CENTER APPROACH TO WORKING WITH SENIORS
We aim to educate older adults and their caregivers in the fundamental movement patterns that lead to better balance, coordination, strength, breathing, and self-esteem. The Alexander technique is the core of our program. As Alexander Technique teachers, we teach the fundamental principles that govern movement. Our approach is to teach students to recognize harmful movement habits and help them to make healthier choices. Students learn how to approach both simple and complex movements by increasing awareness of the inherent poise of the body, letting go of habits that get in the way of easeful movement, and integrating the whole body into the activity. With both verbal and gentle hands-on guidance, students learn how to release tension and fear, resulting in an experience of greater freedom, balance and coordination.
