Individual Lessons Tailored to You

 

Lessons provide an opportunity for students to experience an optimal level of organization, ease, and flow so that this state becomes a reference point for easy movement during all activities.

What to expect in a lesson:

  • Teachers will use verbal and hands on guidance to help you explore your specific patterns. 

  • You will work sitting, standing, walking and incorporate specific activities you are interested in improving.

  • You will be guided towards better overall organization and balance, while paying particular attention to areas that could be easier or more connected.  

  • There is time for recuperating horizontally on a table, allowing for an even greater sense of ease and integrating your new coordination. 

How to prepare for your lesson:

  • In Person Lessons are 50 minutes and take place at the Balance Arts Center located at 151 W. 30th Street on the 3rd floor with elevator access.

  • Virtual Lessons are 25 minutes and take place on Zoom.

  • The BAC is a mask-friendly space. Masks are now optional in lessons, classes, workshops, and intensives.

  • Arrive 5 minutes before your appointment to check in.

  • Bring or wear comfortable clothing. Suggested attire is pants and shirts with sleeves.

  • We remove shoes before entering our studios, come prepared to work in socks or with bare feet.

Private Lesson Faculty:

Ann Rodiger is the Founder and Director of the Balance Arts Center in New York City. She has nearly 40 years of teaching the Alexander Technique. Her teaching draws from her knowledge from teaching the BAC Teacher Training Course and private lessons in the US and abroad as well as her knowledge of Labanotation, Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Yoga, meditation and various dance techniques. She has developed the BAC Alexander Technique Teacher Training Program and substantial programming for performing artists. She has also adapted the Alexander principles to work for those with hypermobility and Ehlers Danlos Syndromes. Rodiger teaches internationally in Germany, Belgium, Greece, and Turkey. The Balance Arts Center is a NYC Women and Minority Owned Business and a thriving place for the community to teach, share knowledge, and perform.

Alexander Technique Teacher, Movement & Vocal Specialist, EDS/HSD

Thomas Baird has choreographed for the Metropolitan Opera, performed with the New York Philharmonic and has been a movement consultant for several Broadway productions. He is a dancer and certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, having graduated from the Balance Arts Center in NYC in 2009 under the direction of Ann Rodiger. He has presented workshops at many AT conferences such as the Freedom to Move, Freedom to Play and Sing, and Freedom to Write, and at Franklyn & Marshall College, Ohio Northern University, University of Richmond and in Tokyo, Japan. He teaches AT in the Dance Division at The Juilliard School and the Dance and Music Conservatories at SUNY Purchase College. He assists Ms. Rodiger in the BAC’s Teacher Training program, and has private practices in NYC and Norwalk, CT. In the summer, he teaches the AT to singers at Si Parla, Si Canta, an opera intensive held in the summer in Arona, Italy.

Heather Gardner is a Philadelphia and New York City based soprano and violinist/violist. She holds a Bachelor of Music from The Eastman School of Music, a Masters of Music from Rutgers University and is an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique instructor through the Balance Arts Center. She teaches both voice and Alexander Technique in Philadelphia and New York City and is interested in helping her students find greater freedom of choice in their daily lives as well as on the stage.

Alice MacDonald is a performing artist and Alexander Technique teacher living in Brooklyn, NY and Bath, ME. She is an AmSAT certified AT Teacher and graduate of the Balance Arts Center. Alice is currently on faculty teaching dance and Alexander Technique at Movement Research (NY), Balance Arts Center (NY). She maintains an Alexander Technique private practice in New York City, Southern Maine, and online. As a performer, Alice has collaborated with Aretha Aoki, Lily Gold, Anneke Hansen, koosilja/danceKUMIKO, Jennifer Monson, Molly Poerstel, Anna Sperber, Sarah White Ayon, and others. Over the past decade, she has worked in the NYC dance community as Movement Research at the Judson Church coordinator and administrator, a curator at Dixon Place, an organizing member of Brooklyn Studios for Dance, and as co-founder of FREE ADVICE, a mentorship platform for artists. Lindy Rogers is an Actress, Director and an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique Teacher based out of New York City. She teaches privately and at the Balance Arts Center. She also teaches movement courses at St. Margaret’s House with a focus on balance and mobility. Her special interest is in working with the elder population; especially in relation to walkers and canes as a reference point for getting back to balancing on two legs. Lindy enjoys working with all walks of life in broadening their awareness of themselves and the 3-D world in which they live.

Tim Pyper studied the Alexander Technique with Ann Rodiger and is a 2018 graduate of the Balance Arts Center. A professional classical musician, he has won critical acclaim for his work as an organist and choral conductor. With degrees from Cornell University and the Eastman School of music, he currently directs the music program at Church of the Holy Apostles in Manhattan. Tim teaches the Alexander Technique as well as the Lister-Sink Method of keyboard pedagogy. He works in New York City and in Albany.

Cancellation Policy:

Students will receive a full refund if cancellation occurs more than 48 hours in advance. Cancellations within 48 hours of a scheduled lesson will receive a 50% refund of the lesson fee.
