CTLE-Eligible Professional Learning
Help teachers thrive, not just survive.
Teacher Sustainability is Balance Arts Center’s professional development series. Grounded in the Alexander Technique, this series is built to reduce stress and protect the voice, focus, and presence teaching runs on.
The Series
Teaching runs on constant communication, energy, focus, and adaptability — and little of that is renewable without practice. Teacher Sustainability applies the Alexander Technique, an internationally recognized method for improving coordination and reducing unnecessary effort, to the specific demands of a classroom. Participants leave with tools they can use immediately: in how they stand in front of a room, project a lesson, and recover between periods.
Participants Learn How To:
Strengthen classroom communication and student engagement
Protect vocal health and reduce fatigue
Manage stress and maintain focus through the school day
Build a calm, confident classroom presence
Improve classroom management through communication, not control
Work more efficiently without losing impact

Who We Are
Founded in 2008 by Ann Rodiger, Balance Arts Center teaches mindfulness and awareness in action through the Alexander Technique. Ann trained with Joan and Alex Murray in Urbana, IL, and draws on Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals, yoga, and meditation. She has taught at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, the City College of New York, and Juilliard.
From Teachers Who’ve Taken It
"With the Alexander Technique, I was better able to bring myself to the present moment externally so that I could regulate myself internally, and when I am grounded, it often shows up in my work and my students' work."
Christian Cepeda — Academy of Urban Planning and Engineering, Special Education - Algebra
As a choral director and music teacher, I find Alexander Technique extremely helpful! My experiences at BAC with Ann Rodiger have encouraged mindfulness in my movements, my breath, and my voice use (for singing and speaking). As a conductor, it's an invaluable practice in efficiency, balance and ease, which I hope will help extend my career well into later life.
